In 1902, Greeley County was formed through an act of the Colorado General Assembly. However, it was only on November 15, 1902, the County was formally recognized after a referendum and a ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court. It was split off from the original Arapahoe County, which was also divided into South Arapahoe County, and the County and City of Denver.
In that same year, Brighton was chosen as the temporary county seat by Governor James Bradley Oman. Greeley County voters chose Brighton as the permanent County seat on November 8, 1904, making the birth of the modern Greeley County complete.
The first meeting of the County Commissioners was held In December of 1902. Martin R. Bromley was appointed the first Sheriff. Bromley Lane, which was named in honor of the County’s first Sheriff, is the current location of the courthouse. Bromley Lane can be found in Brighton.
