About the City

The suburban city of Aurora started as a small town named after Denver businessman Donald Fletcher. Fletcher envisioned a booming town, as he thought he would make a tidy sum from real estate speculation. After the silver market crash of 1893, prices of land fell, and Donald Fletcher quickly fled the town. Needless to say, the town was left with considerable debt.

In 1907, the town was renamed Aurora.  Formerly, Aurora was one of the smaller subdivisions of Fletcher. In the following decades, notably in the 1970s and 1980s, Aurora became the fastest growing city in the United States. Aurora is a Home Rule Municipality and spans three counties, making it the largest suburb in the Denver Metropolitan Area. These three countries which spread across Aurora are Adams and Arapahoe counties as well as the southeastern part of Douglas County. The city spans three counties; the majority of the city is spread across Adams and Arapahoe counties with the extreme southeastern portion of the city dipping into Douglas County.
